We did it! You've been an awesome class and it breaks my heart that I don't get you all back next here. My days just won't be the same starting off without you. But alas, time moves forward and so must we. Below are two things for your viewing pleasure.
Thank you for showing up to my class this semester and building our classrooms culture. I hope to see ALL of you (yes, even you) next year!

15 days of school remaining! For this course, what this means is it is time to put in any last work on our projects we want, recognize that we need to have a stopping point in the near future, and put the finishing touches on our portfolios. Grade-wise, you can look in Synergy now and see every grade that will go in the gradebook from now until the end of the semester. This includes two more SMART goals and SMART goal ends and one more summative grade which consists of making a resume and making your portfolio presentable (which some of you who have kept up with their portfolios already have). Additionally, if you wish to remediate any past grades read below for your options.
Resume and Final Portfolio Check
Remediation - Portfolio and SMART Goal Grades
Portfolio feedback's are nearly all completed! Apologies for delays. I'm waiting to post the grades until all the interviews are completed (today) and then those last are graded. Check for a message in slack with a PDF image of your written feedback and grade when that time comes.
By popular demand, below are the rubrics for the portfolio checks. There are three different options to choose from, choose the one which best reflects your work: One is for continuing work on a previous project, the second is for if you have started a new project, and the third is specific to BEST robotics. If you feel like one of these does not reflect your work in this class let me know and we can adapt/modify one. Astute observers will notice that each of the rubrics says something about an interview. For this presentation, we will not be presenting your portfolio to the class (a bunch of BEST robotics presentations would get a little dull) but instead presenting them as if you are in an interview for a job/college/position and are trying to show off your work. These will take place throughout next week one on one with me.
New project: rubric_portfoliocheck2_newproject.pdf Continuing a project: rubric_portfoliocheck2_continuingproject.pdf BEST robotics: rubric_portfoliocheck2_newprojectbest.pdf Please plan to have your portfolio's up to date for check #2 by next Monday (11/11). For some of you this means you are continuing a project you've been working on since day 1 and for others this is a new project since the last portfolio check. The rubric's will be slightly different for these scenarios, but updated and meaningful evidence of work should be present on your portfolio. I will post rubrics tomorrow once I get a better idea where everyone is planning to be at by next Monday. For those of you competed in BEST you are still a part of this portfolio check! It is just that your project is the BEST competition and the emphasis should be on what YOU did.
As you revisit your portfolios that you probably haven't looked at in a month, remember that the purpose of the portfolio is a tangible piece of evidence of your work, knowledge and abilities (with an emphasis on your). Make sure to sell yourself, show as much proof of work and engineering knowledge as you can, and to make sure your portfolio project makes sense for someone who is viewing your portfolio with no prior knowledge of who you are. We will be presenting our projects today (Friday, 9/13). The actual presentations will be rather informal and there is no specific structure that I am looking for this. The only requirement is that you must have some visual aid (one of your member's portfolios in all likelihood), and if possible you can show off your project.
The significant grade aspect is in your actual portfolio which every one of you must have and they will be individually graded accordingly!
FYI, grades for the first report card are due Monday after school. I expect to have the grades/feedback to you on Monday but these grades will not be put into the first six weeks so as to ensure there are significant 12th hour drops in your gradebook without having the chance to make corrections on your portfolios. Two opportunities are available to you:
TSA
GHP
Coming to a classroom near you this next Thursday, 9/12, we will be having our first major grade relevant to your project work: a portfolio check as well as everyone getting to present their work!
Here is the rubric for this summative (~test) grade: rubric_learningplan1.pdf A key thing to note on this is that it very similarly aligns to a 5 step Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve). I would recommend creating a page on your portfolio dedicated to your current project and then to outline this page according to the Engineering Design process and populate it with relevant pictures, figures, Gantt charts and text. Plan on being completed with this portfolio by Thursday and then we will present our projects on Thursday in class. You do not need any additional PowerPoint or visual for your presentation, just your portfolio. I can show you a couple examples of past portfolio pages that are well done, they just won't be linked on this site. As discussed in class on Wednesday, I will be out on Thursday. I will be at a mini-conference at Wheeler, so I will be in the building and accessible if need be, but I should not be in the classroom.
Your project work should continue on just fine without me, however. The only catch is that the wood-working room will remain locked along with the tools within it. If it is fine with the substitute the drill/driver are fair game as well as the hand tools. Make sure to be posting a SMART goal for yourself (not one as a group) in your slack channel. The timeframe of this goal should be this week, 8/19-8/23. Expect this to be the norm for every Monday, so make this a weekly habit!
