Some things can't be rushed, and I believe that this bridge build is one of them. To make sure we all have ample time to complete the pending assignments from last week (ASCE infrastructure report and the surveying adventure) and to not rush our bridge's, let's now plan on breaking our bridges on Monday, February 1st.
Additionally, I would like to reiterate my documentation and grading expectations: The bridge building project will consist of a summative grade, and your grade is based off your documentation (rubric and possible template below). The purpose of the documentation is for you to create evidence of what you did/learned and the process by which you got there in a formal manner. This doesn't need to be an essay, but is more similar to what you might imagine to be on a flyer where it is hitting highlights and there is an emphasis on the visual appeal. The rubric and the template are both modeled off of the Engineering Design Process, so consider how you went through this process while constructing your bridges. Lastly, be sure to keep and collect as many pieces of evidence of your work as possible, such as pictures, sketches, drawings and data.

Goal: To build a balsa wood bridge across an 9.5” gap with the highest structural efficiency
Purpose: to practice designing with constraints and taking care to detail Rules & Guidelines
cumentation of projectThere are two grades which will be associated with this project: Turning in and completing the phase I debrief (formative grade weighted at 100, graded on you and your team making an honest attempt at the bridge build and in answering the questions) and the phase II bridge documentation. We'll speak about these more tomorrow, but here's a sneak peak of what to expect: Goal: To build a popsicle bridge across a 12” gap with highest structural efficiency
Purpose: to practice norms of project-based learning as well as to Rules & Guidelines
Disclaimer: Most of our Surveying Adventure!™ will be done outside, and it is quite cold and rainy today... you will have sufficient down-time next week while making your balsa wood bridges to finish the outside portions, just worry about the indoor parts today.
Disclaimer #2: I have less surveying equipment than we will likely have groups. Plan on ~1/2 of us starting class with the surveying tools and the other half of us starting with the ASCE infrastructure report and then switching. Today we are going to be doing two things: Going on a Surveying Adventure!™ and also learning about the state of the USA's infrastructure. Before all of this, however, I would like everyone to take a moment to become familiar with our surveying equipment (equipment used to take a survey: a map out of the elevation change and other physical features of land used frequently before beginning construction at a site). and how to use them. Today (January 22nd) we are making spaghetti towers, with an emphasis on promoting positive learning environment with creativity and teamwork as well as demonstrating our understanding of the 5 forces of statics.

Congratulations! We are starting our first "real" unit. Fittingly, it is on the original modern engineering field, Civil Engineering. In this unit we will be covering:

Two things on are agenda today: chatting about safety/taking a safety quiz, and then *hopefully* finishing our unit 1 summative.
Resources To Do
By Thursday, we will officially be done with the first unit of this course and begin a unit on Civil Engineering! [cue applause] To commemorate this, we will be having our first summative grade due by the end of class on Wednesday --for those of you who are not aware, a summative grade is a "major" grade covering the summation of your knowledge, usually a test. In my aversion to tests***, you will have a couple options for what your summative grade will look like:
1. Presentation to class (no more than two per group) 2. YOUR OWN notes (can be hand written or digital) 3. Project & accompanying documentation
Whatever you choose as your summative grade, we will spend today preparing for it and tomorrow you will either present, continue documenting/note-taking, or take the test. For all non-test summatives, here is the rubric which will be used:
