Below is the info on registering your project to the STEAM symposium, verbatim from our fearless Leader, Christian Barnes:
"Submit and present a project (or projects) at the Symposium
In short, what you have to do by Tuesday, April 9th is to submit THIS FORM. If and when you do so, please inform me. I like to know these things. I can help you fill out the form if you're not sure how to make your project hit the needed check boxes. Another note specifically relevant to this class: Do not avoid completing a STEAM project to avoid doing additional work. There is very little that needs to be done to get your project symposium-ready, and the little that does need to be done (writing an abstract, making your project "presentable" with a poster or something of the sort) we will all be doing no matter if your project is going to be a part of the STEAM symposium or not. And lastly, here are two other documents you can look at with more info on the STEAM symposium. They contain no additional info needed relevant for the April 9th deadline but you may want to look at them:

One more week unit Spring Break [cue the excitement] and with that, one more Sprint SMART Goal before then: SMART-Goal for 3/25-3/29
Some other notes to know for this week:
Sorry for the big list of information! We're coming up on an exciting and busy time of our semester. Good luck making it through this last week before the break and if you are feeling overwhelmed in work please let me know :)
This Friday we will be having our next major grade: Our next portfolio check (rubric attached below) and we will also present our projects.
Regarding our portfolio check, many of us our now theoretically completed with our first project in this course and so the rubric has additional criteria to account for the entirety of the Engineering Design Process and not just the steps up to planning. If you do not have a completed project, that is 100% ok. This will in no way be held against you, but you the rubric now has a greater emphasis on the creation aspects of your project to reflect the greater amount of time you have had to be physically working. The presentation will happen on Friday, March 22nd. If we need additional time it will extend into the subsequent Monday. You will only need to present once as a group, not individual group members repeatedly presenting the same thing. BUT, everyone should participate in the presentation (you will notice this is a component on your rubric). The presentation can be informal and doesn't need to take more than 5 minutes, and can certainly be less; in the business world brevity and effectiveness in communication weighs more important than speaking for the sake of filling time. For this presentation you should have some sort of visual aid, but fortunately everyone of you already has this! This visual aid being your physical project as well as your online portfolio. If you wish to make a PowerPoint that is a great way to show evidence that you put some thought into your presentation but it is by no means necessary. Rubric: rubric_project1.pdf Self-Evaluation Link: https://goo.gl/forms/ZpDvk4tR77ap7HFS2 As we discussed, I am gone this Friday, 3/15, in Albany, Georgia at an FRC robotics competition. There are two things for you to get done today:
A note on tools: I've left a note to the sub about the use of tools (amongst other things) in this class. If the substitute is fine with you using power tools I am fine with it, however, their judgement is final and please respect their decision. Subbing for a class can already be a stressful job at times and I don't wish to make my classroom an extra-stressful place. The only tools which I am personally veto-ing are the welding iron, table saw and lathe. I hope you all have a great day and a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday! You know the drill! Here's the Google Form link for writing a SMART Goal for this week:
https://goo.gl/forms/K2Bf85PgGm3k1vzf2 Disclaimer: Wednesday is a half day and I will be out this Friday for a robotics competition Complete this Google form before you leave today! Even if you didn't complete the SMART goal at the beginning of the week, fill this out with what your SMART goal would be
https://goo.gl/forms/StQ5IwobQQxeHGQh2 This week we are going to have our first Sprint! If you are unfamiliar with what a sprint is, it is a common startup company term where a team will set short (1 or 2 weeks) term goals which each different team member should be focusing on.
We will make SMART goals (if you aren't familiar with these, see the image below or come ask me and we will talk about what this means) to start the week and then end the week with an evaluation on how we met those goals. Meet with your team and fill out the Google form linked below. I expect them to be very similar between teammates (especially regarding the team's priorities), but everyone should submit their own and have their own SMART goal. When the week is over, we will have a debrief of how we did. Google Form to fill out: https://goo.gl/forms/GqcIQEEnb0YNw2Lu2 In preparation for the Lockheed visit tomorrow, we’re going to pretend like they are coming for a job interview (they’re not here for looking for interns just to make sure we're all on the same page, but let’s pretend). Often times in an interview what makes a candidate stand out in an interview is not their GPA, work experience, or credentials, but it is the soft-skills you display during an interview and how you present yourself as being a potential employee who is genuinely interested in learning and growing in the company and not just someone who is showing up to the interview "just because." This is especially true for new hires right out of HS/College or who are looking for an internship as you will not have 10+ years of professional working experience and references. So, with this in mind, we are going to go through some of the preparatory research which you should do for any interview you have in your life.
Fill out the following form before the end of the day and turn it in. You can either complete it on a computer and then print it out (print double-sided please) or I have some paper copies you can write on. Assignment to complete: interviewresearch_lockheed.docx In case you missed the memo before the break, we got the grant for the table build and should be good to go! Thinking "big-picture" for this project, here are the steps to take: theoretically we should be mostly done with the first 4 already, but we now have a chance to revisit them and redo them.
1. Knowing who is on your team 2. Coming up with a design -How tall will the table be (need a classroom chair to fit)-How wide will the table be (# of students at desk) -What will the depth be? -How much weight will the table need to hold? -Any other key/relevant dimensions 3. Creating a clean and professional looking hand/CAD drawing -If you turned in your drawing before the break, I have it. For most of these, however, we want to redo them a little neater (or in a CAD program) and with more specific dimensions 4. Creating a materials list -I already have an official materials list which I will purchase today or tomorrow, but we have the opportunity to make amendments if we have any last minute changes. 5. Creating a build plan (Gantt chart) -Go to the resources section of this class for three different excel templates for Gantt charts to use 6. Building the structure 7. Adding the electronics/any other special additions 8. Finishing 9. Testing 10. Re-design |
