In preparation for the Lockheed visit tomorrow, we’re going to pretend like they are coming for a job interview (they’re not here for looking for interns just to make sure we're all on the same page, but let’s pretend). Often times in an interview what makes a candidate stand out in an interview is not their GPA, work experience, or credentials, but it is the soft-skills you display during an interview and how you present yourself as being a potential employee who is genuinely interested in learning and growing in the company and not just someone who is showing up to the interview "just because." This is especially true for new hires right out of HS/College or who are looking for an internship as you will not have 10+ years of professional working experience and references. So, with this in mind, we are going to go through some of the preparatory research which you should do for any interview you have in your life.
Fill out the following form before the end of the day and turn it in. You can either complete it on a computer and then print it out (print double-sided please) or I have some paper copies you can write on. Assignment to complete: interviewresearch_lockheed.docx

You know the drill from last week: fill out this Sprint planning for this week and then expect a debrief at the end of the week: https://goo.gl/forms/sfDpSUJq4nJKCkYa2
While you are planning on what you want to get done this week, know that employees from Lockheed Martin will be visiting our classroom this Wednesday, 2/27. I do not anticipate this taking the entire class period, but it theoretically could if you have many questions for them or would like to spend time talking to them one on one. Fill out the following Google Form to see how you did in accomplishing your SMART goal we set at the beginning of this week's sprint.
https://goo.gl/forms/dVcsHl6PAnzaeyMC2 I hope you all have a good break and I look forward to seeing you all in 9 days! With the lulls before the break about to hit, I thought it would be a good idea to stay motivated with a one week sprint! If you are unfamiliar with what a sprint is, it is a common startup company term where a team will set short (1 or 2 weeks) term goals which each different team member should be focusing on.
We will make SMART goals (if you aren't familiar with these, see the image below or come ask me and we will talk about what this means) to start the week and then end the week with an evaluation on how we met those goals. Meet with your team and fill out the Google form linked below. I expect them to be very similar between teammates (especially regarding the team's priorities), but everyone should submit their own and have their own SMART goal. When the week is over, we will have a debrief of how we did. Google Form to fill out: https://goo.gl/forms/gSEfig5w5vxdkutu2 On February 1st we will be having our first summative grade! [cue applause] This will be a grade on having the progress on your project updated and present on your portfolio. I'm not expecting you to have a completed project in any way whatsoever, but what you should have are evidence of the first four steps of the engineering design process: Ask, imagine, research & plan.
What this will mean is that you personally have evidence (text, images, pdf attachments, etc.) of your project work and/or learnings on your portfolio. It is 100% acceptable if some of the text between you and your teammates on your portfolio are identical, but it has got to be there on your portfolio. I’m looking at your portfolio as if I am a potential employer, not as a teacher who has seen you every day this year: if it’s not on your portfolio or I can’t understand how you were involved in the project than it’s as if your work never happened. ***a special note on the individual student's roles criteria: as someone who has interviewed people for positions from full-time jobs to high school summer programs, this is a major point of focus. People will discuss projects which they were a part of in great detail and what their company/team did, but it is very hard to know for an outside interviewer to know how integral this individual was to this project and what they actually did, or were they simply just there. Here is the rubric: rubric_askresearchimagineplan.pdf Here is the self-evaluation link: https://goo.gl/forms/rAY7TDQEpDWX8blH3 As we begin getting into more hands on work in the classroom, I think it will be worthwhile to go over some of the tools we have in the classroom. Here is a pdf you can refer back to of the specific tools you will find and can expect to become familiar with throughout this semester: notes_toolsinthisclass.pdf
For this week, it is my dream that we get a jump on whatever projects we want to get done this year, at least from a planning perspective. The class's budget needs to be spent by early February, the Cobb Shark Tank needs to be applied by January 31st, and TSA competition submissions are due by February 15th, so I figured many of us would appreciate having time early on in this semester to get going on whatever long term projects you want. A couple options to help you get going if you don't already have an idea:
Welcome to my class and congrats on making it to day three! This blog page is specific to Engineering Applications and Research students, however, this specific post is the same for all of my classes. I will do my best to update this blog at least weekly with whatever material we are covering in class. Here is a quick snapshot of what has happened so far:
Monday Objective: What to expect in this course Resources:
Tuesday Objective: Learn general safety and workshop maintenance practices Resources:
Wednesday Objective: Get class portfolio skeleton setup Resources:
Thursday Objective: Familiarize ourselves with TSA and completion opportunities Resources:
Friday Objective: Complete class setup projects Options:
3rd Block: Complete the following Student Health Survey: http://gshs.gadoe.org/SitePages/HighSchool.aspx This is an anonymous survey which 75% of each grade level must complete in order for Wheeler to be eligible for the school climate star rating. |
